Background of the Study:
Political polarization, characterized by sharply contrasting political attitudes, has become a significant challenge to community cohesion. In Nsit Ubium, deep political divides are impacting social interactions and community solidarity (Obi, 2023). Heightened partisanship has led to conflicts, reduced dialogue, and a breakdown in communal relationships (Ikechukwu, 2024). Scholars argue that such polarization undermines the social fabric and can lead to long-term socio-political instability (Amadi, 2025). Moreover, the rapid spread of polarized narratives through traditional and digital media further exacerbates tensions, hindering collaborative community efforts. This study examines the extent to which political polarization influences community cohesion in Nsit Ubium, considering factors such as media influence, ideological divides, and leadership styles (Obi, 2023). The analysis aims to provide recommendations for mitigating polarization and fostering unity within the community.

Statement of the Problem:
In Nsit Ubium, increasing political polarization is fracturing community bonds and disrupting social unity. The division along partisan lines has created an environment of mistrust and hostility, undermining efforts toward communal development. This study investigates the impact of such polarization on community cohesion and seeks to identify strategies for reconciliation (Ikechukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the extent of political polarization in Nsit Ubium.
  • To examine its effects on community cohesion and social relationships.
  • To propose measures to mitigate polarization and promote unity.

Research Questions:

  • What are the manifestations of political polarization in Nsit Ubium?
  • How does polarization affect community cohesion?
  • What interventions can reduce the negative impacts of political polarization?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Political polarization significantly undermines community cohesion.
  • H2: Polarized media narratives exacerbate social divisions.
  • H3: Community-based dialogue initiatives can improve social unity.

Significance of the Study:
This study offers valuable insights into the detrimental effects of political polarization on community cohesion in Nsit Ubium. Its recommendations aim to guide local leaders in fostering reconciliation and social integration (Amadi, 2025; Ikechukwu, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effects of political polarization on community cohesion within Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Political Polarization: The divergence of political attitudes to ideological extremes.
  • Community Cohesion: The strength of relationships and solidarity among community members.
  • Social Integration: The process of uniting diverse groups into a cohesive society.
